Objective: Certification of NDE Personnel – ASME VIII-1, ASME I (E2023), and B31.1
(E2020/2022)

1. Purpose:
Ensure NDE personnel are qualified and certified per ASME Section VIII-1, Section I (E2023),
and B31.1 (E2020/2022) code requirements.

2. Applicable Codes:
Certification shall follow ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ASNT CP-189, or an employer-based Written
Practice consistent with these standards.

3. Code Application:
 ASME VIII-1: Certification of NDE personnel is required per UW paragraphs for
volumetric examination and per Appendix 8 and/or 6 for surface examination
 ASME I (E2023): Requires qualification per PW-54, PW-55, and ASME Section V
 ASME B31.1 (E2020): Per Paragraph 136.3.2 and in accordance with Code Case 3085,
certification shall follow ASNT SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, or an employer Written Practice.
As an alternative, ASME Section V may be used if referenced by the construction code
